Why I became a Photographer

I started taking photos in the 1950s, when I was a little boy. My first camera was a Kodak Box Brownie. I was playing with my cousins and brother & sister and left it on a rock by the sea side in northern Tasmania. When I returned it was submerged. I still remember the sick feeling as I lifted it up and saw sea water drain from it. My uncle Noel was a very talented photographer and he helped me buy a much better camera, which I managed to keep dry. But I never really knew much about photography.

I took a few photos over time and my interest increased when I met my wife-to-be in 1973. Jenny was a wonderful subject. Her father Ray was a keen photographer and under his influence I started processing my own black and white photos. I found that quite intriguing. I still remember the smell of the chemicals and the excitement of seeing the images appear on the photo paper. But I didn't know any of the intricacies of photo development. I soon left my Black & White photography and development behind as colour photography became available and we started having children.

From the 1970s to 2012 I took a lot of family and holiday photos and also photos on international business trips. I had a quality SLR camera for a while - before digital - but really knew nothing about photography. But for most of the time I had various digital cameras.

In 2012 I sold my business and took up photography as a "hobby" but it immediately became a "passion", and has remained so. I have been avidly studying photography ever since. Doing multiple courses, reading many books, workshops, learning Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, joined a local photography club and have been on dozens of personal photo shoots - street, sport, bush, wildlife, water drop macro etc.

In 2014 my professional photography career began. Events, Corporate Headshots, Weddings, Family, Architecture.

I also do volunteer work for several charities and churches eg Jesuit Social Services, Eastern Palliative Care, Prison Fellowship Victoria.

I am also a volunteer with Prison Fellowship Victoria, visiting Port Phillip Maximum Security Prison in Truganina - 20 kms west of Melbourne. Our work there is offering friendship to prisoners - no photography of course.

And of course I take many photos for friends and family, especially my 8 grandkids.

I'm now concentrating on people photography. Portraits, Corporate Headshots, events.

I love taking beautiful photos of people - portraits and at events. Many people say "I never look good in photos". Sometimes it's just a self deprecating comment, but often it's because the people taking photos of them really do not understand how to take photos, especially if they are using mobile phone or tablet cameras. I use the best light, equipment, posing direction, environments eg no distractions, processing and years of study and experience, and guarantee that everyone looks great in my photos.
